    IN CONGRESS, July 4, 1776
    The unanimous Declaration of the thirteen united States of America,

    When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.

    We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.--That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, --That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness. Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shewn, that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security.--Such has been the patient sufferance of these Colonies; and such is now the necessity which constrains them to alter their former Systems of Government. The history of the present King of Great Britain is a history of repeated injuries and usurpations, all having in direct object the establishment of an absolute Tyranny over these States. To prove this, let Facts be submitted to a candid world.

    He has refused his Assent to Laws, the most wholesome and necessary for the public good.
    He has forbidden his Governors to pass Laws of immediate and pressing importance, unless suspended in their operation till his Assent should be obtained; and when so suspended, he has utterly neglected to attend to them.
    He has refused to pass other Laws for the accommodation of large districts of people, unless those people would relinquish the right of Representation in the Legislature, a right inestimable to them and formidable to tyrants only.
    He has called together legislative bodies at places unusual, uncomfortable, and distant from the depository of their public Records, for the sole purpose of fatiguing them into compliance with his measures.
    He has dissolved Representative Houses repeatedly, for opposing with manly firmness his invasions on the rights of the people.
    He has refused for a long time, after such dissolutions, to cause others to be elected; whereby the Legislative powers, incapable of Annihilation, have returned to the People at large for their exercise; the State remaining in the mean time exposed to all the dangers of invasion from without, and convulsions within.
    He has endeavoured to prevent the population of these States; for that purpose obstructing the Laws for Naturalization of Foreigners; refusing to pass others to encourage their migrations hither, and raising the conditions of new Appropriations of Lands.
    He has obstructed the Administration of Justice, by refusing his Assent to Laws for establishing Judiciary powers.
    He has made Judges dependent on his Will alone, for the tenure of their offices, and the amount and payment of their salaries.
    He has erected a multitude of New Offices, and sent hither swarms of Officers to harrass our people, and eat out their substance.
    He has kept among us, in times of peace, Standing Armies without the Consent of our legislatures.
    He has affected to render the Military independent of and superior to the Civil power.
    He has combined with others to subject us to a jurisdiction foreign to our constitution, and unacknowledged by our laws; giving his Assent to their Acts of pretended Legislation:
    For Quartering large bodies of armed troops among us:
    For protecting them, by a mock Trial, from punishment for any Murders which they should commit on the Inhabitants of these States:
    For cutting off our Trade with all parts of the world:
    For imposing Taxes on us without our Consent:
    For depriving us in many cases, of the benefits of Trial by Jury:
    For transporting us beyond Seas to be tried for pretended offences
    For abolishing the free System of English Laws in a neighbouring Province, establishing therein an Arbitrary government, and enlarging its Boundaries so as to render it at once an example and fit instrument for introducing the same absolute rule into these Colonies:
    For taking away our Charters, abolishing our most valuable Laws, and altering fundamentally the Forms of our Governments:
    For suspending our own Legislatures, and declaring themselves invested with power to legislate for us in all cases whatsoever.
    He has abdicated Government here, by declaring us out of his Protection and waging War against us.
    He has plundered our seas, ravaged our Coasts, burnt our towns, and destroyed the lives of our people.
    He is at this time transporting large Armies of foreign Mercenaries to compleat the works of death, desolation and tyranny, already begun with circumstances of Cruelty & perfidy scarcely paralleled in the most barbarous ages, and totally unworthy the Head of a civilized nation.
    He has constrained our fellow Citizens taken Captive on the high Seas to bear Arms against their Country, to become the executioners of their friends and Brethren, or to fall themselves by their Hands.
    He has excited domestic insurrections amongst us, and has endeavoured to bring on the inhabitants of our frontiers, the merciless Indian Savages, whose known rule of warfare, is an undistinguished destruction of all ages, sexes and conditions.

    In every stage of these Oppressions We have Petitioned for Redress in the most humble terms: Our repeated Petitions have been answered only by repeated injury. A Prince whose character is thus marked by every act which may define a Tyrant, is unfit to be the ruler of a free people.

    Nor have We been wanting in attentions to our Brittish brethren. We have warned them from time to time of attempts by their legislature to extend an unwarrantable jurisdiction over us. We have reminded them of the circumstances of our emigration and settlement here. We have appealed to their native justice and magnanimity, and we have conjured them by the ties of our common kindred to disavow these usurpations, which, would inevitably interrupt our connections and correspondence. They too have been deaf to the voice of justice and of consanguinity. We must, therefore, acquiesce in the necessity, which denounces our Separation, and hold them, as we hold the rest of mankind, Enemies in War, in Peace Friends.

    We, therefore, the Representatives of the united States of America, in General Congress, Assembled, appealing to the Supreme Judge of the world for the rectitude of our intentions, do, in the Name, and by Authority of the good People of these Colonies, solemnly publish and declare, That these United Colonies are, and of Right ought to be Free and Independent States; that they are Absolved from all Allegiance to the British Crown, and that all political connection between them and the State of Great Britain, is and ought to be totally dissolved; and that as Free and Independent States, they have full Power to levy War, conclude Peace, contract Alliances, establish Commerce, and to do all other Acts and Things which Independent States may of right do. And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor.

    Out to go camping!
    I'm heading for bed shortly. I'll be off for the weekend to go camping (yes, probably in the rain) with [info]yiaya up on Tahoma. Most of my stuff is packed in the car and I'll be heading out the door around 9:40 or so in the morning.

    We've had thunderstorms off and on last night and today and the weather report says 40% chance of rain, but I'd put the chances higher than that. I'm hoping it'll keep some of the less-hardy vacationers out of the parks, leaving it for lunatics like us. I have some spirit work to do up there and am taking a few altar things with me.

    [info]varushka was over for dinner this evening -- we hadn't seen each other in at least a couple of years. I made lamb curry and then did a couple of readings for her and we spent time talking dogness and catching up. I introduced her to my roomie [info]alfrecht and they seemed to get on quite well. I know I had fun!

    Today when I was running around doing a few errands [info]alfrecht and I were in the Borders at the Everett Mall. While cruising the metaphysics section we were discussing the prevalence of Ravens in the Pagan community. A young guy chimed in that his tarot reader is a Raven. I asked which one and of course it was Raven down at Edge. I told him she was my roommate for a while and we made comments about the smallness of the universe. I was exceedingly amused.

    I must haul the doglet out before I sleep for his evening constitutional. If you order Circle of Stones over the weekend, please be patient -- I'll send you the file link after I get home, probably on Monday.

    Everybody have fun, and don't blow any limbs off with fireworks this weekend! I shall be sorely disappointed in you if you do.

    Amazon (unsurprisingly) lying about book availability
    Remember how some of us have been saying Amazon's new policies would harm small publishers? Now we have proof that Amazon is lying about availability to back up its bullying policies. Avontaynu is a small press dealing with Jewish history. Read about their adventures in test-ordering their own books from Amazon and the lies they've received when they inquire about the orders.

    Friends don't let friends buy from Amazon.

    Aaauuggh! Network connections
    So, I found out yesterday why we're having so many difficulties with network connectivity at TELS. It seems that QWest changed the length of our local loop from 13k feet to 18k feet. Considering that a DSL line is 15k feet at the outside, this was causing a lot of problems. The line has been put into "Safe mode" so that the connectivity speed is down but the line is a lot more reliable.

    This relates somewhat the net connection at the new place since it is 16040 ft from the CO. Speakeasy tells me that they'll not be able to give me a DSL line there since it is too far. This doesn't make for a happy Torin. I'm thinking that I'll try contacting QWest again to see if they can get me DSL service. Otherwise, I'll have to use Comcast. Definitely not something that I want to do but it's better than -no- high speed network.

    A peek into Shinto
    My friend [info]brandywilliams posted a little video on YouTube that she filmed at the Shinto ceremony this past weekend of the Great Midsummer Purification ritual. I'm embedding it here for those who have sufficient bandwidth to play so you can see for yourself a little bit of what we experience when we go to the shrine in Granite Falls.



    There's a wonderful sense of peace out at the shrine, regardless of whether there is ceremony happening or not. The location is beautiful and the shrine itself is set into the landscape with a feeling for the energies of the place. Barrish Sensei is a delightful person and it's always fun to hear him speak. If you're local and you ever have a chance to visit the shrine, I highly recommend it. It's a blessing to have such a rare thing as this so close to my home.

    How women manage to rape and mutilate themselves before killing themselves remains a mystery. These are the troops the government wants us to "support"?

    Tired puppy (that would be me)
    This morning once again involved roofers outside my bedroom window all morning and we had the additional joy of a generator in front of my next door neighbor's patio going off and on all day until nearly 6pm, yay.

    [info]jcalanthe and [info]bearfairie got stuck in construction traffic and so arrived several hours after they had initially hoped to appear, but I drove them down to the local Chinese place and we had dinner. After that we came back to my place and talked and laughed and had a fantastic time until my brain started to give out about 10:30ish.

    They'll be around for about another week, so we may see them again while they're up here. Apparently my place is now officially the "bus stop with entertainment" of life. I am amused. I am also going to have a decaf tea with a little whisky, read a bit, and head for bed soon.

    We did talk rather a bit about the whole writing thing and the incipient book, which may end up being about the geiltadecht thing before I tackle the somewhat saner topic of filidecht. Maybe if I get that out of my system it will help me focus on the more socially acceptable end of the tradition. And who knows -- maybe it will help other folks get their heads around that whole "poetry, madness, and death" thing when they (like me) have been stuck in the madness loop for a while.

    Healing. It's not all pretty sunshine and unicorns. Sometimes the best you can hope for is functional.

    Slow Food Nation in San Francisco
    The Slow Food movement is having a conference in San Francisco. All you Bay Area folks might find this a lovely time, not to mention one during which to enjoy fantastic local treats. I think it's an idea whose time has long past arrived and that embracing it will make a huge difference in the way we live through affecting the way food is produced.

    Catching up on the past few days
    I feel like I've been running as fast as I can to stay where I am at the moment, though for the most part I've been having fun. My flamekeeping shift went well and I got a little fannish writing done, though nothing particularly important. I'm kind of working my way back into my writing along with spending less time at the computer and more time with a book in hand. This, I think, has helped me in feeling a little more peaceful. What else has Erynn been up to? )

Many many thanks to Scott for creating the PDF for me. I'll see about having info up on my website this week, if my webguru will be available for updates.

    In the meantime, you can send me a payment through inisglas (at) seanet (d0t) com for $10 if you'd like a copy. This is a scan from the published book, and so it is presented with all its old viewpoints, bits of factual error, and every wart it ever had. Consider it an historical curiosity rather than a reflection of my current beliefs and practices, but it has a lot of nice ideas for exercises and can be modified to suit your own CR type practice.

    Just saying, I love my native Pacific Northwest.

    I recently found a comment in a book review to the effect of: "In the early 1970s, there was in Oregon a semi-tongue-in-cheek outfit called the James G. Blaine Society. It's pupose was to make Oregon sound so unattractive that no one - especially Californians - would move there. Famously, the Society did an interview on national television in a furious rainstorm, with the interviewer and the interviewee huddled under umbrellas, ankle-deep in water. Only as the camera pulled back, over the course of the interview, did you discover the interview was being conducted in a fountain in downtown Portland, on a brilliant, cloudless day."

    That's today, a brilliant and cloudless day. Yesterday I looked up and realized that I have never seen Mt Rainier so clearly and beautifully. Driving around on chores today the mountains all around in every direction were distinctly visible and marvelous.

    Another good day
    [info]alfrecht headed across the water this morning before I got up and won't be back until tomorrow shortly before we're supposed to head to Seattle for ritual. I didn't get to bed until about 7:30 this morning and got up about 2:30 when [info]yiaya called.

    Checked email and such then headed over to see her. We went for a walk around the "lake" (more a pond) near her place in Lynnwood then ate and went to the grocery when we got back. After that we worked on the desserts for tomorrow at her house -- a merlot gelatin (vegan) and a chocolate pie. By the time I'd finished working on the gel, though, my hands were shaking too badly to help with anything else. I had her pour the gell and put it in the fridge lest I spill everything.

    Headed home after that and am enjoying a little personal space with the Pupulator. Gonna get offline soon and read. I just had salad and there's a chicken thigh with bbq sauce in the oven. I'll probably have the remainder of my rice pudding afterwards.

    It's supposed to be in the mid-80s tomorrow. I'm looking forward to sun and warmth. Yay summer!

    Unexpected benefits of high fuel costs
    [info]lupabitch posted a link to this story about jobs returning to the US due to rising fuel costs. I'll admit this is one result that I hadn't considered on a large scale, but it definitely makes sense when I think about it.

    I've always figured that higher fuel costs would bring a return to individual craftspeople and local farmers, but returning manufacturing wasn't on my radar. What I hope will happen along with this is the creation of a new, more ecologically sensitive infrastructure surrounding manufacturing processes and their associated pollution and health risks.

    I'd love to see people understanding that health care is essential to the re-employed or newly employed workers, though given that the relocation of manufacturing back in the US is due to cost-cutting measures, I'm not going to hold my breath. What's really necessary is a change in the way we all think about what we use, and about where it comes from, its quality, and how it gets to us.

    Will the trend continue? The story's author seems to think so. This would be a good thing and help a lot of people whose jobs went overseas in the last couple of decades. Anything that helps more people feed themselves and their families is likely to be at least a little bit on the plus side of the equation.

    Rocinante's first cargo haul
    Went down to Fred Meyers today with my bicycle and picked up 1 cu ft (over 28 litres) of potting soil, a pot for the calla lilies that [info]yiaya gave me, and a few odds and ends. Talked to a couple of people who thought she was wonderful, including a guy who had built his own cargo racks and electric assist for his bike. He copied down the url for Xtracycle before I headed home. Rocinante handled well and the drivers were polite, even though we were in rush hour traffic on the main north-south road through the area off I-5.

    I got home a bit winded and sweaty, but I'm still learning how to handle the gears on the minor hills here before I take her anywhere with more aggressively sloped terrain.

    Apparently Dino Rossi thinks that "G.O.P." on his publicity info will fool people into not realizing he's a Republican. Fox news, the Times and the PI are all reporting on this story.

    Run, you silly Republicans, run!
